Irene Kaltenborn's cinematic world revolves around the poetic and the political, raising philosophical and existential questions that she illuminates. She is interested in how the eye and gaze of the camera can create alternative ways of seeing the world, and how we can interact with the non-human around us through a deeper understanding and empathy. Her artistic and cinematic work is based on thorough research and a deep engagement with history, phenomena or contemporary discourses, often exploring the relationship between man and nature. Through a personal, painterly and poetic imagery she straddles the line between documentary and fiction. Her filmmaking practice contains something as rare as a profound form of caring.
She is the founder of the independent production company Vidåpne Øyne and
currently lives and works between Tromsø and Malmö.
